This is a study of the female ritual clowns of Rotuma, a small island north of Fiji. It examines the central role of these women in production of fine mats and the celebration of marriage. Hereniko combines ethnographic accounts with fictional narratives in attempt to convey the intricate interweaving of religion, social hierarchy, gender relations and conflict management in the society.
